Towday, I want to talk about a question I hear almost every single day.
“Sir, I have the degree. I have studied. Now I want to start tax practice. Where do I begin?”

If this question is in your mind, believe me, you are not alone. In Pakistan, thousands of people have qualifications like CA, ICMA, ACCA, Advocate, or Commerce graduate, but they still feel confused when it comes to entering practical tax practice. The purpose of this discussion is very simple: to take you out of confusion and give you a clear, realistic, and legal roadmap.

Clear Problem Explanation

Tax practice sounds very attractive. People say they wadnt to become corporate lawyers, tax consultants, or advisors handling big clients. These words sound impressive, but the problem is that most people only look at the destination, not the journey.

The biggest mistake is the shortcut mindset. Many people think that after watching a few YouTube videos or completing an online course, they are ready to start tax practice.

The reality is very different. Tax practice is not just theory. It is a highly practical field where even a small mistake can create problems for a client for five to six years.

Pakistan’s tax laws change almost every year through Finance Acts, SROs, and amendments. These things cannot be fully understood only by reading books.

Another major issue is that people do not understand the difference between return filing and adjudication. If your foundation is weak, you cannot properly represent a client before FBR or in court.

Why This Issue Matters

A tax return is filed today, but its impact can last for the next six years. If we are sitting in 2025, FBR can still issue notices for tax year 2020, and legally, those notices can come up to 30 June 2026.

Now imagine this situation:

You filed a return with the wrong income head

You adjusted withholding tax incorrectly
You claimed a credit that was not allowed
You prepared a weak wealth statement

That single mistake can keep the client in trouble for years. This is not only a loss for the client, but also a serious risk to your professional reputation.

That is why tax practice is not just about earning money. It is about trust, responsibility, and deep understanding of the law.

Step-by-Step Solution:

A Practical Roadmap for Tax Practice

Step 1:

Understand Your Eligibility

Under the Income Tax Ordinance 2001, only certain professionals are legally allowed to practice tax. This is not an opinion; this is the law.

Eligible professionals include:

Advocates
Chartered Accountants
Cost and Management Accountants (ICMA)
ACCA members

Income Tax Practitioners (ITP) with a valid license, usually commerce graduates

If you fall into any of these categories, you are legally eligible to practice tax. If not, the first step is to obtain the required qualification or license.

Step 2:

Work at Least Two Years with a Senior Professional

This is the most important step, and unfortunately, the one most people want to skip.

My sincere advice is to spend at least two years working with an experienced tax consultant, tax practitioner, or tax lawyer.

Why two years?

Because during this time:

You will file returns for at least two tax years
You will understand how the law changes from year to year
You will deal with notices, amendments, and basic audit proceedings

A real-life example:

Certain exemptions existed in tax year 2019 that were withdrawn in later years. If you worked on returns of multiple years, you would clearly understand how and why these changes matter in practice.

Step 3:

Master Tax Return Filing

Return filing is the foundation of tax practice.
If you cannot file a correct return, you cannot handle adjudication properly.

Everything starts from the return:

Declared in come
Withholding tax adjustments
Tax credits
Wealth statements
Capital reconciliation

Notices arise from returns
Amendments are made to returns
Audits are based on returns

That is why you must learn how to file:
Salary individual returns
Business individual returns
AOP returns
Company returns

Along with this, wealth statements and capital reconciliation must be clearly understood.

Step 4:

Develop Understanding of Adjudication

Adjudication means defending your client’s case before FBR or appellate authorities.

This includes:

Replying to show cause notices
Handling audits
Understanding amendment orders
Filing and arguing appeals

Here, confidence alone is not enough. Legal knowledge is essential.

You must know:

Under which section the notice is issued
Which year’s law applies to the case
What the limitation period is

For example:

If the case belongs to tax year 2020, you cannot apply amendments made in 2024 or 2025. Each tax year is governed by its own law.

Step 5:

Study the Law Alongside Practical Work

Academic knowledge and practical experience must go together.

Only reading the law is not enough
Only doing practice without law is also dangerous

You should regularly study:
Income Tax Ordinance
Annual Finance Acts
SROs
FBR circulars and instructions

When you connect legal provisions with real cases, true understanding develops.

Important Warnings and Common Mistakes

The biggest mistake is the shortcut mentality. No one becomes an expert in a few months.

Second mistake: relying only on online courses. They can guide you, but they cannot replace real practice.

Third mistake: saying yes to every client and every case. If a matter is beyond your understanding, consult a senior.

Fourth mistake: not staying updated with law changes. In Pakistan, tax law is one of the most frequently amended areas of law. Old knowledge can be harmful.

Practical Tips for New Tax Practitioners

Always keep proper documentation
Take written information from clients
Never file returns on assumptions
Verify withholding tax certificates
Never mix tax years and legal provisions
Never ignore FBR notices

Most importantly, give honest and realistic advice. Do not make false promises to clients.

Clear Takeaway for Viewers

Tax practice is not an overnight success story.
It is a slow, steady, and professional journey.

If you:
Spend at least two years in practical training
Learn both return filing and adjudication
Keep yourself updated with tax laws

You can become a successful and respected tax practitioner. It is not rocket science, but it does require time, discipline, and hard work.

Motivational Closing Message

In Pakistan, we do not lack tax professionals. What we truly lack are skilled, responsible, and ethical professionals. If you enter this field with honesty and dedication, success, respect, and stability will follow, Insha’Allah.

Build a strong foundation, avoid shortcuts, and make the law your strength, not your weakness.
